Guide to Solar Energy

Explore the benefits of solar energy, understand how solar panels work and more.

What is Solar Energy

Solar energy is the radiant light and heat from the sun that is harnessed using a range of technologies to generate electricity, heat water, and even cool buildings down.

It’s a clean, renewable energy source that has the potential to meet our future energy needs. A common type of solar energy is solar photovoltaic (PV), which uses solar panels to capture solar energy and convert sunlight into electricity.

Why Choose Solar Energy

Solar energy offers numerous advantages, making it an attractive option for homeowners and businesses.

Renewable and Sustainable

Solar energy is abundant and inexhaustible. As long as the sun continues to shine, we can harness its power, unlike finite fossil fuels, which will eventually run out.

Lower Energy Bills

By generating electricity from solar panels, homeowners and businesses can significantly reduce their electricity bills.

Reduced Operating Costs

Solar energy systems have lower operating and maintenance costs than other forms of power generation. Solar panels in Singapore can last for up to 20-30 years and require minimal maintenance.

Environmentally Friendly

Solar energy production generates little to no greenhouse gas emissions and has minimal impact on water resources compared to coal and natural gas.

Energy Independence

Solar energy can provide a degree of energy independence by reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.

Technological Advancements

Ongoing advancements in solar technology, such as improvements in energy storage, continue to make solar energy more affordable and reliable.

Financial Benefits

Solar panels can increase a property’s value. For businesses, roof leasing agreements can allow them to earn additional income by renting out unused roof spaces.

How Solar Panels Work

Sunlight can power homes and businesses thanks to tiny electricity factories on rooftops—solar panels! These panels use a scientific principle called the photovoltaic (PV) effect to convert sunlight into usable electricity.

Inside a Solar Cell

Each panel consists of many photovoltaic cells. These cells have a special layer, usually silicon, that acts like a launchpad for electrons.

Sunshine Makes Electrons Jump

When sunlight hits the silicon, it bumps into electrons orbiting the silicon atoms. This boosts the electrons, freeing them to move around within the cell.

The Highway for Electrons

These freed electrons are not running wild. The PV cell is cleverly designed with an electric field that pushes these electrons in a specific direction, like a highway.

Capturing the Current

Imagine metal plates as lanes on this electron highway. These plates collect the flowing electrons as they move through the cell due to the electric field.

Direct Current (DC) Production

The movement of these electrons creates an electric current, but it is initially a direct current (DC), meaning the electrons flow in one direction only.

AC for Our Appliances

Many appliances use alternating current (AC), in which electrons flow back and forth. To match this, a device called an inverter converts the DC from the panels into AC electricity.

Many Cells, One Panel

Many PV cells are wired together to form a solar panel. Multiple panels create a solar array, the familiar panels often seen on rooftops.

Powering Homes and Businesses

The converted AC electricity can now power appliances, be sent back to the grid for credit or stored in batteries (if the system has one) for nighttime or cloudy days.

Our Processes

Here at Sun City, we leverage City OG’s expertise as an integrated Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) provider, to provide bespoke consultancy and advisory services for energy solutions for your needs. Sun City’s solar solutions are tailored to your requirements and typically involves the following steps:

STEP 1

Site Evaluation and System Design

We will visit your site to assess your roof suitability, sun exposure, and electricity needs before designing a solar PV system tailored to your requirements, considering factors like panel type, quantity and inverter capacity.

STEP 2

Permits and Approvals

Obtaining necessary permits from local authorities is crucial, as permits ensure your system meets safety and electrical codes. Our team will assist you with the application process.

STEP 3

Installation

Depending on the system’s complexity, the solar panel installation process may take days to weeks. This step involves mounting the racking system onto the roof, carefully securing the panels, and running electrical wiring to each panel.

STEP 4

Inspection and System Activation

After installation, a qualified inspector will ensure the system meets electrical and safety standards. Once approved, the system is connected to the grid (if applicable), and the inverter is activated to begin generating electricity.

STEP 5

System Monitoring and Maintenance

Most solar systems come with monitoring systems that allow you to track your energy production. Maintenance is minimal, but occasional cleaning may be needed to optimise performance.
